Game of Warriors 1.6.4

High Nopes ...Not yet at least

Sometimes I do check out new "games" that show up on the Play Store branding titles such as Game of, Clash, Empires, Kings, etcetera. You know, the ones that usually feature an angry dude's face on the game icon and show off artwork instead of actual screenshots on the app page. I should know better myself, but I can't help but hope that this idiotic endless freemium grind is going to end. It seems unlikely though. Game of Warriors surprised me initially with the lack of app permissions. So I thought it might be worth a shot.

In Game of Warriors, it seems that you must gather enough wealth to conquer the four continents and the adjoining icecap that appear on the world map. You do this by sending units you've unlocked to smash heads on the enemy city's defenses. If they last the battle until the gates are chewed up, then you win, and the town starts generating gold.

The other side of the coin is enemies attacking you. Although we have a world map, attacks are set against one of your generic cities, yet you always have all of the upgrades that you've collected. You also get to choose the moment when you're attacked, which is very anticlimactic if you ask me. The defense battle plays somewhat similar to the attack, but as long as you refrain from sending out too many troops, you can also earn XP points, which help with specific upgrades.

There are plenty upgrades in Game of Warriors. From upgrading cities to generate more gold to upgrading walls, units, and even heroes or mercenary units that you collect from your campaign of conquest. Most of these will cost gold, which is generated at a specific rate per minute. However, once you log out of the game, your income will be reduced, but it can still be collected from the city bank up to a certain amount.

The interface is decent, but it still needs some work, especially when it comes to feedback. Some screens don't refresh properly. That's especially noticeable when you could purchase an upgrade, but the button is still disabled.

Also what I found weird is that ads continue to show up even if you disable your data connection for this purpose. It seems that the app pre-downloads a bunch of them, just so that you wouldn't get away from watching ad videos too soon. On the plus side, there's no tapping to collect resources, which is a step in the right direction.

Final Thoughts

You could play Game of Warriors without caring too much about purchasable currency. If you'd invest all your crystals into the bank, you can assure you get income 24/7. Be that as it may, the game might become a bit too repetitive after 10 or so hours. The cycle of upgrading attacking and defending gets old, and the only things that prolong the enjoyment are the different unit types that show up on the various landmasses. However, maybe Game of Warriors will get some updates soon, so then I would be on the lookout.
